Types of Diabetes

There are three main types of diabetes, type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes. Diabetes diet and nutrition follows much of the same principles for each type of condition. However, a dietician and your doctor will be able to advise you on any specific diabetes diet guidelines, based on the type of diabetes you have.
TYPE 1 DIABETES
People with type 1 diabetes have too high glucose levels in the blood, which comes about because they do not have enough insulin. They need to take insulin every day and take steps to properly manage their lifestyle and diet. People with type 1 diabetes will need to work with their doctor and dietician to create a type 1 diabetes diet plan. The meal plan will follow healthy eating guidelines. Meals will need to be planned, so that they contain healthy foods and are eaten at the same time every day. Fewer, smaller meals are better than large ones. Meals should not be skipped.
TYPE 2 DIABETES
Most people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes. This condition also has too high glucose levels. Although their bodies make insulin, they cannot use it very well. People with type 2 diabetes are usually able to control their diabetes through a type 2 diabetes diet plan. Again, this will involve following a healthy eating plan and eating a few small meals throughout the day.

Gestational diabetes is a condition that occurs during pregnancy. Pregnancy women develop and intolerance to carbohydrates, resulting in high blood glucose levels. When you are diagnosed with diabetes, your doctor should refer you to a dietician. It is very important to go to the dietician as they can help create a diet for diabetes that is tailor-made for your circumstances. Although much of what they say is just common sense, they can help develop strategies for problem areas in your diet and can ensure that your diet meets your needs. It can be tempting to avoid the dietician, but a dietician is very important when controlling diabetes with diet.
